Sounds like quite a range. That looks like it would be more interesting if you want the challenge of dealing with such a wide range.

No, you’re quite right. Invision search has always been busted. Although the stuff Beth is using doesn’t work much better!

  7. My PC is dead. The hard drive has been corrupted and I can’t recover it. I don’t have any backups because our NAS ran out of space. One of the drives on the NAS has also failed.

Yeah I use Winmerge all the time. The problem is that all the executables are on the dead drive, so nothing like that will run. I might be able to use my husband’s machine. The recovered files are on the network, so I might be able to run Winmerge on his machine.

The second pass is done. I have no idea how to compare the files from the two passes to see how many files are duplicates. The OS is non-functional. I might be able to use my Mac but that’s a pain. Anyway I have lots of files to check, so hopefully the stuff I care about is there.

Second pass done. Now to figure out what to do next. I think I’ll compare what I got back in the first two passes. Hopefully the files are duplicates and I’m done. If not, I’ll have to do several more passes.

Not done. When the software scanned the drive, it actually found several separate chunks that had files. I chose the biggest one before, but now I’m trying to recover another chunk . I wish I knew more about hard drive geometry.

Yep - over 400 hours! I think it was something like 420 hrs. I believe I did this build in 2014, so about six years old. I think it was just the PC repeatedly shutting down due to the CPU overheating that damaged the drive. The cats also like to lay on the radiator, which didn’t help!

Finally done recovering files. Now I need to sort through the mess to see what I got. I’ll have to reformat the damaged drive to see if it’s salvageable. I think it will be fine.

I’m using our second NAS, so yeah, that’s part of the reason it’s so slow. The disk had a bunch of bad sectors and after a couple of failed chkdsk attempts, it became RAW. The software I’ve got is recovering the files from the RAW drive.

So it’s been running for just over 100 hours now and it’s recovered 314.65 GB, so it looks like it will take about 300 hrs altogether. I just hope my PC stays up that long. I probably should have just grabbed a few directories. Oh well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

A data recovery program. I don’t want to give them free advertising. :P The progress bar shows about 20%. It has no idea how long it will take because even though it knows how many files there are and the total size, some files take much longer to recover than others. There are a lot of bad sectors, so it’s probably more complicated than just having fragmented files. I think the progress bar is based on the number of files recovered against the total number of files, so it’s more accurate in terms of progress. If it is about 20%, the full recovery would be about 150 hours based on how long it’s been running already.

How long is 1,200,000 hours? The file recovery is still running. When it’s restoring a big file, the time remaining shoots up to approx. 1.2 million hours. I would be a bit farther ahead but the cats had a set-to yesterday and when I ran to see what was going on, I tripped over the network cable and broke it, so I had to start over. :( Anyway I’ve seen it restoring my saved game files, Morrowind, Skyrim, DBC and Black Marsh. Nothing complete yet, just fragments, but it’s still running, so we’ll have to wait and see.

I’ve got a recovery utility running so we’ll see what happens. It takes about 30 hours for each pass, so it’s taking a long time...

That and security. I’m quite sure one of these days we’ll see a cloud site hacked, if it hasn’t happened already.

Possibly. I’m actually distrustful of cloud services, believe it or not. But it would certainly ease the stress with hard drives failing.

If the drive was just data, I could at least get the machine booted, but I put part of my Windows installation on it because my boot drive is an SSD. I might buy a recovery utility and see if that will allow me to recover the data. It’s not just mods that are affected. All the pictures and files for my cattery site are also on that drive.

Yeah Ibsen also finished the other quest lines, so I have a lot of material to process. I’ll have to do a count, but there are quests for the Hist Tribes, Shadowscales, Sotho Tren, Trillium Magnata and a new side quest. Not all of those are new, but Ibsen did rewrite a couple to match the shortened main quest line.
