      Orphan Attachments   07/31/2018

I have been doing some housekeeping lately and I've noticed that I had a lot of orphaned attachments. Attachments get orphaned when the PM or post is deleted without removing the attachment first. Deleting a PM or post does not delete the attachment and the file or image remain on the server. I'd like to ask all members to go through their attachments and delete any attachments you don't need anymore or those that have been orphaned. Where can I get a list of my attachments? Click on your display name in the upper right corner of the forums and pick "My Attachments" from the drop-down list. How can I tell an attachment is orphaned? If the PM has been deleted, you'll see a message like this in your attachment list: Unfortunately there is no message if the post has been deleted, so please check your old posts. We do purge old birthday threads every once in a while. Also some hosted projects have been shut down, so you may have orphaned attachments on one of those locations. Thanks!

  1. My PC is dead. The hard drive has been corrupted and I can’t recover it. I don’t have any backups because our NAS ran out of space. One of the drives on the NAS has also failed.

How long is 1,200,000 hours? The file recovery is still running. When it’s restoring a big file, the time remaining shoots up to approx. 1.2 million hours. I would be a bit farther ahead but the cats had a set-to yesterday and when I ran to see what was going on, I tripped over the network cable and broke it, so I had to start over. :( Anyway I’ve seen it restoring my saved game files, Morrowind, Skyrim, DBC and Black Marsh. Nothing complete yet, just fragments, but it’s still running, so we’ll have to wait and see.

What's the program? For 1,200,00 hours it sounds like a very long progress bar is required!

A data recovery program. I don’t want to give them free advertising. :P The progress bar shows about 20%. It has no idea how long it will take because even though it knows how many files there are and the total size, some files take much longer to recover than others. There are a lot of bad sectors, so it’s probably more complicated than just having fragmented files. I think the progress bar is based on the number of files recovered against the total number of files, so it’s more accurate in terms of progress. If it is about 20%, the full recovery would be about 150 hours based on how long it’s been running already.
