      Orphan Attachments   07/31/2018

I have been doing some housekeeping lately and I've noticed that I had a lot of orphaned attachments. Attachments get orphaned when the PM or post is deleted without removing the attachment first. Deleting a PM or post does not delete the attachment and the file or image remain on the server. I'd like to ask all members to go through their attachments and delete any attachments you don't need anymore or those that have been orphaned. Where can I get a list of my attachments? Click on your display name in the upper right corner of the forums and pick "My Attachments" from the drop-down list. How can I tell an attachment is orphaned? If the PM has been deleted, you'll see a message like this in your attachment list: Unfortunately there is no message if the post has been deleted, so please check your old posts. We do purge old birthday threads every once in a while. Also some hosted projects have been shut down, so you may have orphaned attachments on one of those locations. Thanks!

TheDarkListener34 reacted to Arthmoor in Wildfires in West Coast and Hurricanes in East Coast.
Wildfires are a natural process in the states where they're burning right now. The problem isn't due to climate change, it's due to bad forest management policy. Down here in SoCal for example, we're waiting for the Big Bear area to go up in smoke. The forest service has been barred from removing all the dead trees that have been affected by bark beetle infestations. 45% of the entire forest is dead and all it'll take is one well placed lightning strike or an arsonist to set the whole thing off. Forestry has said that once it goes up, there's no stopping it. The fire would grow so fast it would be thousands of acres before anyone would even have time to respond. The same mismanagement is a systemic problem state wide, and also similarly problematic in Oregon and Washington too. The system itself needs to change or wildfires that occur naturally anyway will just blow up into infernos until they pull their heads out of their asses about it.

Hurricanes have actually been largely suppressed for the last 150 months or so. That said, even though Harvey and Irma are giant monsters, neither is actually the largest hurricane ever seen and those records go all the way back to the late 1800s. The reality is that the US just hasn't been hit by many of the storms that have rolled through the Atlantic during that time frame.

Trump acknowledges that climate change exists btw. What he doesn't accept is that we as humans caused it - which a hell of a lot of people agree with. Despite what Al Gore said, the science is not settled and the debate is not over. The fundamental problem is arrogance in assuming that the climate was never once hotter on this planet than it is right now. Their own geological evidence proves that it's been considerably hotter on this planet before and we didn't even exist then. Antarctica without ice? It's happened many times before. The Ice Age we emerged from 15000 years ago hasn't hit the interglacial peak yet. That's not due for another 5000 years.

But in voting aimlessly, it doesn't let them know how I feel. I just feel that if I can't actually express my opinion, it's just better off not voting. I don't like any of the candidates that are running so I'd rather not give them the support.

So, I got this notification from my OS windows 7 saying "oh you should download windows 10" not exactly like that, but you know what I meant. However, I am not sure if I should download it or just leave it. Since I have themed out my desktop with windows 7 requirements.

Hmmm...It would be very interesting to have a DBC windows 10 or 7 theme

Oh great Amadaun and Andalaybay haha.

Just kidding. But yeah, be very interesting.

I kind of stumbled on this mod tonight. I was on the original team. People started jumping ship and I stayed with a few to oversee the new team, but I looked in the credits and didn't recognize many, if any (this was many years ago) names. I guess a few more good people took the reigns. I'm glad to see it was finished with great acclaim, and more glad to see a sequel in the works. I'm just sad we no longer have thedarkbrotherhood.com, because that domain is now worth 2grand! It was a home for me, the people were family. It's been at least 7 or 8 years. Such nostalgia. I don't even know what to say, I feel like I'm one of the teams forgotten ancestors, but remembered through contribution of thoughts written to words creating a story. I'm so pleased to see it survived, produced beautifully, and is on to greater things. I feel like a proud parent. You were all able to do what I couldnt, to carry on with dedication, skill and knowledge unbeknownst to me. Skyrim was still only a twinkle in Bethesda''s eye. To the memories, to the future, Hail Sithis!

Time for an update. Work on the new release continues. There are lots of bug fixes and I've tightened up some of the scripts. The most important thing in the new release is the voice acting and work continues on that. I've learned how to edit audio files and I think I've gotten pretty good at it. We have had some new actors join the team, so I'm hopeful that we'll finally be able to finish all the voice acting.

There will be a significant change to the final quest in support of the next chapter, Consequences.

I grabbed it, but I usually play games on my iPad while watching TV and it requires too much focus. It's a little too anal for my taste - you have to micromanage your denizens. It might be better once you're used to it and you have everything set up. I only played it for a few minutes. The latest update sounds interesting (now you get weapons) so I probably will give it a proper play at some point.

I did a thing - Its a variation of the Forever Free logo
    Customized for The Assimilation Lab

^^ Click the image goes to the Forever Free logo page - To do that remove the spaces from the following ^^

    [ url = http: //www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/65163/? ] [ img ] http: //www.theassimilationlab.com/forums/uploads/gallery/album_43/gallery_5279_43_69057.png [ /img ] [ /url ]

The first URL is the click target ( where clicking the image takes you ), the second URL is the logo image location

So you can put an image anywhere and link it to something else ( Beware linking an image location from someone elses website, you dont want to be one of many thousands of users taking the source websites bandwidth to link an image you are using on a different website - In other words ideally you ought to have a copy of the image uploaded to the website you are linking it from .. Like I have on TAL for use in my ( or anyone elses ) mods descriptions on TAL )

Feel free to use them, for instance at the end of a mod description on TAL : It serves as a declaration that your mod or resource will never be charged for ( If people want to donate to your project in some way .. That would be their choice ) - For example have a look at the end of the description on the following mod :

    http://www.theassimilationlab.com/forums/files/file/1054-kill-the-orchestra/

I have also sent a PM that the Forever Free uploader can include a copy of these in the file on Nexus
Its also uploaded on Nexus Forever Free page as User Uploaded images

And available in four sizes here on TAL, to use them here are the urls with Nexus Forever Free link back :

Nota Bene : I do not have anything against anyone elses desire to make money out of their own work - As a personal preference though I like our sharing community, and if you want to declare your individual projects or resources never shall be charged for, then now you have a logo to express that.
Thats all this is - Keep the "paid for" debates in other appropriate topics please.

My fear is that it's a very vocal minority. I know a lot of people didn't like the idea, but I wonder how many were like me and at least willing to give it a try. Quite frankly I'd love to produce top quality mods and get paid for them. If I'm getting paid, I could do a few extra things, like pay for voice acting and buy professional 3D models. I'm not employed in RL right now, so I don't have the money to spend to do those things otherwise.

I do know some people said that if Bethesda had explained their rationale and their plan before springing it on the community, they would have been more open to the idea. People felt betrayed and Bethesda has certainly made a royal fuck-up of the whole thing.

I'm also convinced that a number of people took advantage of the situation to be complete and utter dicks and didn't even care about the issues at hand. We had the same thing with the G8 summit a couple of years ago, so it's definitely not limited to gamers.

Let's please not attribute to 'the gamer world' what was evidently perpetrated by a vocal minority of internet tough guys and screeching kids who were or are yet to learn limits. I know no conflation was intended, but... No. We are worlds above this, as are most gamers. It took too much media degradation to get to where we are already, so let's not even hint at the idea that it's part of our nature in particular and not that of extreme human immaturity.

The key point here is that modding for Bethesda games has been going on for almost 15 years. You can't suddenly introduce a paid option into that and not upset a lot of people. As they quickly discovered, TES mods are rarely done on their own. We use other people's resources, either with explicit permission or the resources were released as a free and open resource.

I bet the other games that they refer to have never had any modding at all before they introduced paid mods.

Good. Now I don't need to fret about what I'm going to do!

Whole system is badly implemented and doesn't offer anything of value to the actual community. It's not self-sustainable and all that's likely to happen is that some individuals will make a couple hundred bucks off it while valve/bethesda will make a couple thousand off of them. Everyone will eventually calm down and the market will speak for itself one way or the other.

Personally, I have no interest in paying for mod content or for selling mod content. I'm not offended that anyone feels differently on either point though. Frankly, the atrocities here are some of the reactions on display. Partially the blatant flaming and insult throwing; partially some of the more insidious attempts at swaying peoples views of others into negative light. It's all very silly and I'm glad that I've distanced myself from the TES modding community for some time now.

I didn't see the latest posts to this thread either. Leo, that article now has me rethinking my approach.

Here's my situation: I have been planning on doing Skyrim XP ever since Skyrim was released. It has been on hold, first because I needed a whole bunch of functions added to SKSE, second because of other commitments and third because I would have to learn Flash. I will probably have to buy some new software to develop this mod. We already own Visual Studio, which costs $1000/yr to keep the license going. I've also bought other programs in support of my modding endeavours.

No, no one has forced me to do those things. I have always considered it the cost of pursuing a hobby. But if I have a chance to recoup some of those costs, why not take it? I was planning on making Skyrim XP available on SW for a fee and also making it available here and on Nexus for free - all the same version. That way those who wanted to contribute financially could do so, but it's not fair to make something as fundamental as Skyrim XP only available to those who can afford it.

That article Leo posted has me rethinking things. Skyrim XP is going to be extremely complicated. The Oblivion version is bad enough. I take the support of my mods very seriously and commit a lot of time to it, so I'm not worried about that side of things. But I don't want to hand over all my rights to Valve and Bethesda either.

I think I understand the backlash from the community over this. We feel betrayed by Bethesda. With Bethesda and Valve splitting 75% of the proceeds from mod sales, it's obviously a money grab. We have created mods for the enjoyment of it, to learn something new and sometimes to gain valuable experience. Now Bethesda has turned our pastime into a profit making scheme, with them seeing most of the profit.

And yes, Robin is being rather two-faced about this whole thing. Nexus is a service provider, so they are making money from the mods being sold on SW. No wonder he's not worried.

As for me, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. *sigh*
