      Orphan Attachments   07/31/2018

I have been doing some housekeeping lately and I've noticed that I had a lot of orphaned attachments. Attachments get orphaned when the PM or post is deleted without removing the attachment first. Deleting a PM or post does not delete the attachment and the file or image remain on the server. I'd like to ask all members to go through their attachments and delete any attachments you don't need anymore or those that have been orphaned. Where can I get a list of my attachments? Click on your display name in the upper right corner of the forums and pick "My Attachments" from the drop-down list. How can I tell an attachment is orphaned? If the PM has been deleted, you'll see a message like this in your attachment list: Unfortunately there is no message if the post has been deleted, so please check your old posts. We do purge old birthday threads every once in a while. Also some hosted projects have been shut down, so you may have orphaned attachments on one of those locations. Thanks!

Out with the old, in with the new!

So the time finally came for me to upgrade. I think 6 years on my old hardware was probably about enough to ask of it. Besides, I know some of it is ready to croak so I'm long overdue :P

New goodies:

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139012
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132255
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113393
Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103202
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233629
Harddrive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178307

Ought to arrive early next week. Sadly couldn't will call anything because it wasn't in stock here in California.

Not updating the graphics card since I just got an R9 290 with 4GB on it back in February.

Also not updating the PSU since it's an Antec 900W with good 40 amp rails already.

The retiring components:

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2Ghz
Memory: 8GB Corsair Dominator
Motherboard: Asus M4A79T Deluxe
Harddrive: 1TB Hitachi SATA 2. This bastard is really slow for whatever reason, also it's the oldest part here.

Antec case, unknown model, with dead USB ports on the front. Sadness.

Zalman cooler that wouldn't fit the new socket :P

That looks really good. You've picked cool components (as in low heat), so the case fans should do just fine. The case also accepts a radiator if you want to switch to a Corsair H100i like I've got. The only thing I'd recommend is going for a Samsung SSD for your boot drive and programs. Your machine will boot in seconds and programs will load a lot faster. I still use a regular drive for my data and games and they are really quick. I did opt for a 10,000 rpm drive, but even a 7200 with an SSD will be pretty quick.

Nice rig!

I got the same impression as Anda.  Nice rig you got there.

Seagate is a good brand, both fast and silent but also reliable.

When I read the specifics for the motherboard I notice that ASUS has a RAM disk feature, so I recommend to consider adding 4 Gb or even go with 8 Gb to 12 Gb resp 16 Gb to get the best performance of the RAM disk feature ASUS has.

The RAM timings look strange to me. Are those timings standard with RAM that speed? I'm used to lower speeds with lower timings so I'm rather curious.

It appears to be expected timings for RAM of that speed, yes.

Interesting Rig, relatively modest CPU but lots of RAM and a big-ish GPU.

Mind you, as I discovered when I built Gram, you don't need as much power as you think you do a lot of the time.

A 3.9 GHz CPU will make Oblivion fly at the very least.

Please, with the Oblivion game engine, it never flies. Best it can manage is to hover.

Heh, true. Besides, the new gauge is Witcher 3 so we'll see how that does :P

I'm with her on this one - remember when I was running around the BC waterfront at 40-50 fps?

Really? I've never heard that before. Noctua fans are used everywhere.

This is the one I've got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181090&Tpk=35-181-090&cm_sp=Cat-Fans-PC-Cooling_2-_-Pillars-_-H100i-GTX-Extreme_1

The part that goes on the CPU is just a small square piece with two hoses coming out of it. Your case is equipped with the radiator mount on the top, so you might check that out. Perhaps a little pricey, but your CPU will be nice and cool. It's quiet too.

Certain Noctua coolers are designed to be low profile to fit into tight spaces. The low profile ones usually have the heat pipes at an angle (close to 90°) so that you can fit the heatsink into a tiny case. :)

The NH-D14 is one that's not designed for small cases. That sucker is enormous and really keeps things cool. :D

New system is up! I'm VERY happy with the results :P

The fan I got turned out to be pretty damn big, pics on Newegg didn't really do it justice. It's all so very very quiet now too.
