      Orphan Attachments   07/31/2018

I have been doing some housekeeping lately and I've noticed that I had a lot of orphaned attachments. Attachments get orphaned when the PM or post is deleted without removing the attachment first. Deleting a PM or post does not delete the attachment and the file or image remain on the server. I'd like to ask all members to go through their attachments and delete any attachments you don't need anymore or those that have been orphaned. Where can I get a list of my attachments? Click on your display name in the upper right corner of the forums and pick "My Attachments" from the drop-down list. How can I tell an attachment is orphaned? If the PM has been deleted, you'll see a message like this in your attachment list: Unfortunately there is no message if the post has been deleted, so please check your old posts. We do purge old birthday threads every once in a while. Also some hosted projects have been shut down, so you may have orphaned attachments on one of those locations. Thanks!

What are you eyeing as far as forum software, AB?  A little while back, when you switched to the current of IPBoard (?--I think that's the one), you were dissatisfied.  At the time, you said you would shop for some new software, I'm just wondering what's up with that.  I, of course, know you are a busy lady.  How's your house renovations coming?

The house renos are done, although we still haven’t moved back upstairs. Jimi is taking a week off at the end of June and we’re hoping we can get everything moved then. I’ve been busy with cat shows. There’s another one next weekend. Then there’s a break until August. I have a lot of preparation to do for a show, especially since they are in different cities, so I need to arrange for a hotel. Time for a rant: SERVICE ANIMALS ARE NOT PETS! /rant I’m searching for pet friendly hotels and there could be as many as half in the list claiming they are pet friendly when all they will allow are service dogs. In Canada, you are not allowed to deny service to people with service animals, so a hotel HAS to allow them. It’s really frustrating.

We have a list of packages that we want to evaluate. I installed one candidate, but I was having trouble getting Nginx configured, so I’ve left it for now. The damned SSL certificate is being a dick too. For some reason I get errors with TAL’s certificate while my cattery certificate works just fine.

Exactly!  They're required medical equipment and trained professionals!  Adorable and well-loved, but they are not pets.

What forum software was that you installed?

Also, why are you using Nginx and what does it do.

Nginx is the web server. Similar to Apache, but much higher performance and it doesn't use as much memory.

I don't want to say which packages we're evaluating.

Ah, that make sense.  Thank you for the information. :)

That's good.  It was years you were out of the modding game because of a crazy house.

I trust you'll pick a good piece of software.  Does most you're considering offer good configuration options?  Account stuff, but also themes?

We have a set of requirements, like a download area. If it doesn’t have a suite of themes to choose from, then we’ll want the tools to create our own themes. The icing on the cake would be to find something with a forum based bug tracker, but that’s probably too much to ask for.

Regardless what forum software you choose, there is one thing that needs to be handle differently and what I'm talking about is all hosted mods on TAL.

I doubt that there is a forum software that one can replace the IPS Download suite without messing up a lot of mods, so I suggest to begin to move all hosted mods to a new separate download area as a TAL subdomain.

Oh god, not another subdomain! :frightened: Subdomain or not, you still need software to manage and allow people to download the files. I don't have time to write something from scratch.

Anyway this is why I don't want to get into what we're evaluating. We know what we need and I'll get it done.

Joomla is open source and the most widely used CMS software for the majority of websites around the world.  YouTube has a bunch of tutorial videos about how to get started or for the advanced user with Joomla.

Yes. I have it running for my cattery site (www.corauratum.com) but I can't implement it for TAL until we switch to new forum software. You have to have an active IPS license to switch to SSL and we ditched them after the upgrade screwed up the forums and they basically called me an idiot.

More announcements! Gitlab is gone. I have transferred the repositories to one of our servers at home, but the only two repositories that weren’t part of a project that I’m a member of were for people who have left the community. In any event, I have a copy should they return. We were just using the other repositories for the bug tracking, so I’ll transfer the data to a bug tracker if we can find one for the forums.

Gitlab was a pig in terms of server resources. It needed ruby and redis, which used a lot of memory. Now I can downsize the server! That’s vital for me right now as I can’t afford the server fees at the moment. If you can help a bit, please use the Donate button in the main menu at the top of the forums. Thanks!

Just curious.  Are you going to get rid of everything that aren't needed, just to increase the performance of the server?

No, I have downsized the server to save money. Gitlab hasn't even been functional in years, so I was going to get rid of it anyway, but it also allowed me to switch to a cheaper Linode plan.

You could always use the one I wrote. :P

No forum integration but I'd be thrilled to death if someone cooked up something to interface with the IPB members database.

Also that sucks about how IPB was treating you. I honestly can't say I'm surprised but given my own hunts for alternative packages, none of them have download modules to satisfy my own requirement for that.

Ref the announcement: http://www.theassimilationlab.com/forums/announcement/27-orphan-attachments/

Your screenshot shows a bin icon to the far right of the attachment, I don't have that option. Any way to get that bin icon added for everyone to enable easy deletion? Maybe it only appears for orphaned attachments, which I don't have any of?

Perhaps I can take a look and see if I can add the interface. I'd like to check out your tracker. The packages we've been evaluating do offer a download module, although I need to sign up for a demo to really check them out.

Really? Stupid software! Fixed now.

Speaking of the orphans thing, if none of the attachments we have are orphaned, we're ok to leave them be, right?

Good news! I have reduced my attachments total from 10mb to 251kb. There you go Andalay, you'll find the server has plenty of space now!

Yes. I mainly want to get rid of the orphaned attachments to prevent problems when we migrate to the new forum software. Reclaiming some server space is good too, of course.

 You don't have to get rid of attachments unless they are orphaned, as I just explained to Arthmoor. :)

In case you didn't know, but Fliggerty are using multi login on GHF.  Which means that anyone who is logged in will also be logged in on MMH, GHF-DL, THoS (now defunct) and TESFeed I think.

MultiLogin enables you to visit this site via different domains without re-authentication.
This site can be visited via fliggerty.com, tesvskyrim.com, mw.modhistory.com.
To use this feature 3rd party cookies from the domains above have to be accepted by your browser. Depending on the settings you might be asked for permission to set cookies accordingly once uppon login.

Also, Fliggerty is a PHP programmer and he once offer people to build a site.

Although, I am not sure if he still offers that these days, but if I were you I would ask Fliggerty about how to set up multi login for both the AFK forum and the AFK Bug Tracker.
