      Orphan Attachments   07/31/2018

I have been doing some housekeeping lately and I've noticed that I had a lot of orphaned attachments. Attachments get orphaned when the PM or post is deleted without removing the attachment first. Deleting a PM or post does not delete the attachment and the file or image remain on the server. I'd like to ask all members to go through their attachments and delete any attachments you don't need anymore or those that have been orphaned. Where can I get a list of my attachments? Click on your display name in the upper right corner of the forums and pick "My Attachments" from the drop-down list. How can I tell an attachment is orphaned? If the PM has been deleted, you'll see a message like this in your attachment list: Unfortunately there is no message if the post has been deleted, so please check your old posts. We do purge old birthday threads every once in a while. Also some hosted projects have been shut down, so you may have orphaned attachments on one of those locations. Thanks!

Elder Scrolls: Blades Early Access

Recommended Posts

I got my early access notice today and have grabbed it for my iPad. No tiny screen for me - I’m blessed with an iPad Pro which I got a few years ago when things were better. There’s no NDA with this; in fact Beth wants people to post about it and post screenshots.

I’ve just started and it looks really good so far. The music is similar to Skyrim and the graphics are excellent. I’ll post more once I’ve actually started playing. I need to dig up my Beth.net credentials first. :P

Sadly for me I can't partake. My Galaxy J7 phone is too old and I have nothing else it would play on. So I'll have to hope it comes to PC later like Shelter did.

So far, the graphics are incredible, so I guess it would be limited to newer devices. I usually play mobile games while watching TV and I think it will require more attention than that!:P

*yawn* Yeah, unfortunately for me, this is rather boring. Your task in this game is to help rebuild a town, so the quests are limited to dungeon diving and step-and-fetch-it. You also save villagers by dungeon diving or clearing an area of foes. It does have crafting, but there’s no animation, just click on menu options and voila you have a piece of armour or a weapon. This will appeal to folks that love clearing dungeons, but it’s really not my thing. This uses the perk system for levelling, like Skyrim. The magic mechanics are rather odd and it still swings your sword even though you are casting a spell, at least I think I’m casting a spell. I might jump in and play this a bit from time to time, but it’s not at the top of my list.

This jibes with my expectations, tbh.

How would you critique it if you were considering it not as a TES game but as a mobile game?

I have Baldur’s Gate on mobile. It’s awkward, but it’s BG. I think a few other elements could be added, even in a mobile game. I really wish they had voice acting, but that might be too much for mobile.

I have continued to play this a bit. The dungeons are repetitive, but the graphics are very good. By default, clairvoyance is enabled. You can disable it in the settings, but I’ve left it on since it can be difficult to find the quest targets otherwise. If you read the forum threads about Blades, you’ll find that the biggest complaint is how you have to deal with chests. When you find a chest in a dungeon, it is added to your inventory and you have to wait for it to open, or spend gems to open it sooner. The basic chest, which is wooden, only takes five seconds to open, but the times quickly and drastically climb. It takes three hours to open a silver chest and six hours to open a gold chest. The real issue is that you can only open ONE chest at a time. So if you’re waiting for a gold chest to open, you will collect a bunch of other chests and can’t open any of them until the gold is done. Bethesda wants you to pay for gems so you can open the chests sooner, but the price to open high level chests is high and you’ll have to spend a lot more money than it would cost for a PC game in order to purchase enough gems to open the chests. The chests also contain required elements to improve the town, which is the primary objective of the game, so many players find the game stuck until they can get their chests open. I’m only level six and I’ve already run into the waiting game as I wait for a gold chest to open. Fortunately I have lots of other stuff to do, so I just play for a few minutes at a time. The timers are real time, so you don’t have to play while waiting for the chests.

Now where's that timescale++ button? Sounds like it wants a mod "Chest Wait Entertainment". Play cards, slots, Sokoban. In a deep dark dungeon it might be more fun with Whack-a-Bone!

Does the game time still tick over if the mobile is in power saver while the game is on?

Yes, the opening time is real time, so time passes no matter what state your device is in. However you can only open one chest at a time, so you can’t queue them up to open while you’re away.

I have issues with Blades... I can't not see the reused assets from Skyrim. There's so much of it. Most of the character assets like bodies, hair, beards, clothes, are all ripped from Skyrim in an obvious way, and it doesn't just end there. Most of the clutter objects are also Skyrim assets, as well as the sound effects and character voices. I understand wanting to cut down on development costs for a side project like this, but it just screams lazy to me.

Yeah. The only difference are the too-perfect books that you can’t read. There only seem to be two different dungeon layouts too. Although the dungeons are Ayleid ruins which Skyrim didn’t have. I haven’t tried the Abyss yet and I don’t know if I ever will.

Yeah and I don't like how you can only interact with objects that have a yellow glow around them. They've essentially taken everything fun about an Elder Scrolls game and taken it out. I tried the abyss, it wasn't that interesting. After 1 run through I can't see myself ever doing it again. The entire game is kind of disappointing. I thought maybe it would change a little bit since the E3 demo I played, but it's still the same. I haven't played it since the early access last week, and I really don't have any desire to. Frankly, I'm not even sure who this game is for.

I’ve read some suggestions on Beth.net and some folks have some good suggestions. I have no idea if Beth could implement them or not. Basically opening the game up a bit so you can explore the area around the town and have interactions with enemies and stuff.

The game just got updated and it looks like Beth is listening on some points. They addressed the biggest two complaints: silver chests now take only an hour to open and if you spend gems to open a chest, you are now asked to confirm the purchase if it costs more than 11 gems. Previously it was too easy to hit Open Now by mistake. They also made a few other changes including improving the rewards in the abyss levels that are below the character’s level.

Here is a good article on how this game is a money trap if you’ll let it. I only play a few minutes at a time and play other stuff while waiting for stuff to finish. Even I’ve had chests pile up and I’m only level 13. I suspect I’ll have to quite entirely soon or only play once every few days. It’s just not worth spending real money on. I like rebuilding the town, but there are only a couple of dungeon layouts, so it gets tiring real quick.

There is one thing I do like! You can create poisons once you build an alchemy shop. Unlike other TES games, the poisons seem to be a character ability rather than attached to a specific weapon, and you can have more than one. So if you use the equivalent of weakness to fire and weakness to poison potion, they last for a few minutes and affect your enemies no matter what kind of attack you use. However if you use a fire spell or a poison spell, or use a weapon with the appropriate enchantment, the damage is much greater and lasts for several strikes and/or spells. Now there are no ranged attacks, so your spells can be interrupted and backfire.

Now I understand all the complaints about chests. You have a limit of 10 chests. That’s it, so you can’t continue the game until you’ve waited six hours for a chest to open. Or you can pay 10 gems to temporarily increase your limit, but there aren’t many gem rewards. Obviously the plan here is to force players to spend real money on the game to buy gems. I guess I’ll continue playing tomorrow. I’ve got other games to play.
